Playing a Small Part in the Singaporean Miracle
Musing over the growth of Singapore since his youth, KL Tan, general manager of TT Tooling Systems, believes it was Singaporeans willingness to be open to the world that played a key role in nation state’s miracle.
Considering that over five million people live in an area less than half the size of Los Angeles, it is an experiment that has generated an entrepreneurial, diverse people who thrive on global trade.
In 1998, TT Tooling Systems was established to serve the island nation’s machining industry with TaeguTec tools.
With machining virtually non-existent in the 1960s, by 2011, the precision machining field developed into a vital contributor to Singapore’s success.
Tan has seen it expand from tool repair shops into electronics, marine, aerospace as well as medical technology.
According to Singapore’s Economic Development Board in 2011, machining contributed S$26 billion to Singapore’s total manufacturing output. In value-added terms, precision machining accounted for S$7.3 billion or 13 percent of Singapore’s total value-added manufacturing output.
Nowadays, Singaporean shops machine more complex parts like oversize components in difficult-to-cut materials (alloy steel, aluminum and titanium) for both the marine and aerospace industries, or produce precision miniature component machining of all metals on Swiss-type lathes for the electronics industry.
TT Tooling Systems is a one-stop distributor with an extensive catalogue of products for any machining requirement, and their knowledge of metal removing engineering practices are hardly matched in the industry.
Moreover, the Singaporean company goes beyond just sales by offering personal and comfortable relations for all companies such as supplying milling tools for the shipbuilding industry or drilling and boring tools to shops dominated by the electronic industry.
But, no matter the industry, TT Tooling Systems offers comprehensive tooling solutions across all applications.
When it comes to dealing with customers, Tan said he enjoys difficult customers, “in fact I prefer fierce customers over laid back customers.”
Tan lives for the satisfaction of winning them over by demonstrating how TaeguTec tools can save a shop time and money yet enhance productivity all at once.
Regardless of the application Tan knows with each customer he wins over he plays a part in the Singaporean miracle.
